What did he say?

Proverbs 25:14 ” Whoso boasteth himself of a false gift is like clouds and wind without rain.”

There seems to be a propensity among people, Christians as well, to boast of their feats and abilities to others to make themselves look better than they are. Bragging about things they have not done.

They often take stories, embellish them and then turn them into their own stories. At times they often work out scenarios to raise their profile among friends and family, at times to people they will never meet again.

What did he say, is often a thought that comes to mind when you hear a fanciful story being laid out before you.

In the above scripture we can see the true nature of people like this, they are like clouds and wind without rain, they are just big blustery objects being blown about by whatever wind directs them.

I know there are several psychological descriptions for this behavior and I am not one to go into explaining the mind or heart of a man through modern interpretations, I do understand most of what I do hear or read concerning habits and attitudes, behaviors and words, but in my mind I always fall back to my Guide Book, that being the Scriptures.

We are told in scripture no to lie, we are told liars will not have a place in Heaven, we are told to repent of lying and to stay far from it, we are told that the tongue no man can tame. All of the world can be turned around with the tongue and proper speaking. If we do not understand this then we definitely need to reread the Scriptures.

Lying is mentioned 57 times in scripture and rarely in a positive connotation, the same with the word liar, mentioned 13 times and not in a positive light.

To my understanding we have here in John these words of our Savior, John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
So what do we have here? Satan is the father of lies, when he speaks he speaks of his own, what is in his heart, that being a lie. So it can be inferred from the above scripture that when a person takes a little story and embellishes it and makes it his own then he is following after the footsteps of his father, ie the devil.

Boasting about ones abilities is not right, is it an unforgivable sin? No its not. How do we know that?
Abraham lied about Sarah being his sister to the leaders of different countries, Isaac did the same lying about his relationship with his wife, just like his father did. David lied to a king to gain favor with him to hide from the authorities who were chasing him. So there are examples of holy men of GOD lying at times, the reasoning and implications of their behavior I will save for another little post but to suffice to say they each repented of what they did and the LORD blessed them.

So what did he say? Listen then turn away. Let them blow and go unless it is going to put your life at risk.

God Bless.
